Reading Jail and the Easter Rising

The ‘Enemies of the State: The Easter Rising and Irish Detainees in Reading Prison’ project was a collaboration between the Department of English Literature at the University of Reading and Berkshire Record Office; it was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), as part of their Cultural Engagement Fund pilot scheme, and highlighted in their annual review (pp. 14-15). Led by Professor Peter Stoneley, ‘Enemies of the State’ sought to engage new, local, non-academic audiences with under-used archives on the internment of Irish patriots in Reading Prison following the 1916 Easter Uprising.

I was employed as the project’s Cultural Engagement Fellow; my duties and activities included archival research, updating the archive catalogue, organising a public event and exhibition, engaging with local audiences, and giving media interviews to publicise the project. I also created and maintained a project blog.
